Why Diversity and Inclusion is Important in Early Years

Diversity describes differences in age, culture, family structures, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, religion and sexual orientation. Diversity and inclusion is a broad topic of conversation and from a young age, it is important to include this in the EYFS curriculum.

In the early years of a child’s life, diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are essential values that shape the foundation of their education and character development. By integrating diversity and inclusion into our curriculum and engaging with the community, we create a nurturing environment that celebrates differences, fosters empathy, and prepares children for a diverse and interconnected world.

Celebrating Differences through Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to reflect the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of our children. By incorporating diverse stories, literature, and resources, we expose children to a broad range of perspectives, fostering an appreciation for diversity from an early age.

Our curriculum includes multicultural activities, celebrations, and discussions that promote understanding, respect, and curiosity about different cultures. This inclusive approach helps children develop a positive self-identity.

46% of lesbian, gay or bisexual people reporting that they had experienced prejudice based on their sexual orientation (Early Years Alliance). Understanding the LGBTQ+ community is the first step in supporting inclusivity. Language plays a significant role in shaping attitudes. Incorporating books, stories, and media that feature LGBTQ+ characters and families helps to represent our children and to develop a positive understanding of diverse identities.

Engaging with the Community

We believe that community engagement is an integral part of teaching diversity and inclusion. At Cherubs Nurseries we actively seek opportunities to connect with diverse community organisations, cultural centers, and local events.

By venturing out into the community, children experience firsthand the richness of diversity in their surroundings. Field trips, welcoming visitors and guest speakers, and community service projects allow children to interact with individuals from different backgrounds, promoting a deeper understanding of diversity and help them understand how and why they make a contribution.

Encouraging Acceptance and Respect

Early childhood is a time when children are naturally curious and open-minded. By exposing them to diverse cultures, backgrounds, and abilities, we instill values of acceptance and respect. When children see that differences are celebrated, they learn to appreciate and value every individual, fostering a sense of unity.

54% of people from ethnic minorities reporting that they had been a victim of ethnic or racial prejudice (Early Years Alliance). Racism is an ingrained social issue, change begins with education and fostering inclusivity from an early age. By addressing racism in the early years, we can equip children with the tools to combat prejudice, foster empathy, and create a more equitable society. Our curriculum focuses on the importance of shaping a future free from discrimination and our talented educators are positive role models for promoting inclusive language, challenging stereotypes, and celebrating diversity within the nursery.

Developing Social Skills

In inclusive environments, children interact with peers from diverse backgrounds, learning how to navigate social relationships with empathy and understanding. By engaging with children who may have different abilities, cultures, or experiences, they develop strong social skills, communication abilities, and a sense of cooperation. These skills are crucial for building relationships and succeeding in an increasingly diverse society.
