How to keep your child engaged and learning over the Christmas break

It can be hard during the Christmas break to keep your child entertained. Although the school holidays mean time to kick back and relax, it is important to keep your child engaged and learning during this time for a number of reasons.

Firstly, learning during the Christmas break keeps your child’s mind stimulated. Research shows that children who do not engage in any mental activity during school holidays are more likely to forget nearly ⅓ of what was taught during the previous term. Additionally, it’s useful to use spare time during the break to focus on a particular subject or topic that your child is struggling with. Focusing on what they find difficult increases their confidence for their return to nursery or school. All the free time allows learning without urgency and pressure. Your child’s brain is free to relax, imagine and wonder which creates positive feelings towards learning.

Finally, it’s important to hold on to light routines during the break as throwing out routines completely during the Christmas break creates challenges when returning to school and nursery. By engaging your child in learning during the school holidays, it allows you to keep a flexible schedule and create some routine in their days.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and more than likely your child’s favourite holiday. The possibilities of keeping your child engaged and learning during the Christmas break are endless!

Baking
Baking with your child is a great way for them to express their creativity, practice fine motor skills and gain a sense of pride and accomplishment. Christmas is the perfect time for baking, with a variety of festive treats available for you and your child to bake together. Why not try gingerbread men, Christmas cookies or mince pies?

Heading Outdoors
It may be cold outside, but don’t let the chilly weather stop you and your child. Get wrapped up and go explore. Going outdoors and getting some fresh air is one of the best ways for both of you to reduce stress. Along with this, your child can experience freedom, while improving health and fitness.

Arts and Crafts
Christmas is a great opportunity to get involved with some arts and crafts, which can benefit your child in many ways. It gives individuals a chance to express themselves, while also boosting skills such as counting and colour and shape recognition. Why not make some Christmas cards with your little one, to send to the family, or make some Christmas decorations for the tree. It’s lots of fun and much more sustainable.
